Search Seasonality in the 2A & Outdoor Industries
"When is our season?" gets answered with folklore more often than data. We pulled 24 months of US search history across 22 categories in both niches and built the demand calendar. The short version: firearms demand barely moves, outdoor demand moves violently, and they should never share a content calendar.
What the Data Shows
2A Demand Is Flatter Than Everyone Assumes
Per-category swings are small. AR-15 searches swing 1.4× across the year. Concealed-carry permits swing 1.2×, which is close to flat. Ammo runs 1.6×, red dots 1.5×. The only pronounced lifts sit in the November–January window: gun safes peak in December at 1.8× (holiday gifting), suppressors peak in January at 1.8×, optics peak in December, and handguns show a modest 1.6× January bump.
Stop building firearms content calendars around imaginary seasons. Demand is close to steady-state, so publish consistently, then run one deliberate push into the November–January gift window for safes, optics, and suppressors.
Outdoor Is Four Counter-Cyclical Calendars, Not One Season
The niche-average curve (peak November, trough May, about 1.7×) badly understates what happens per category, because the activities cancel each other out. Broken apart, outdoor runs on four separate clocks:
| Calendar | Peak window | Categories | Swing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fall/winter hunting | Oct–Dec | Deer & elk, waterfowl, archery, boots, trail cameras, waders, camo | 1.8–6× |
| Summer water & camping | Jun–Jul | Fishing rods, tents, coolers, kayaks | ~2× |
| Deep-winter ice | Dec–Jan | Ice fishing | 12.8× |
| Spring turkey | April | Turkey hunting | 11.5× |
"When is outdoor season" has four different answers, and your calendar depends entirely on which activities you serve. A hunting brand's year is inverted from a paddle or camping brand's, and a brand spanning both has demand all twelve months.
Gear Leads the Activity, So Publish Ahead of the Curve
Hunting gear (boots, trail cameras, bows) peaks in October–November, right before and into the season, because people equip themselves before they go. Content and AEO take weeks to rank and get cited. Put together, the operating rule is: publish about two months before the demand peak, so you are already ranked and citable when the searches arrive.
The Recurring Curve Misses One-Off Spikes, So Track Event Terms
The seasonal curves here describe a normal year, which is exactly what a planning calendar needs. What they will not show is event demand. "Ammo shortage" sat near 300 searches a month for over a year, then jumped 13× to about 4,000 in March 2026 on a supply scare. The fix is a small basket of event-sensitive terms (shortage terms, "[state] gun law," panic-buying phrases) watched monthly, alongside the planning calendar.
The 2A & Outdoor Seasonality Calendar
Pick a category to see its demand curve across a normal year, its peak and trough, and the month you should publish and stock by. Index 100 is that category's average month.

The Planning Calendar, All Categories
Peak is when demand tops out. Publish-by is roughly two months earlier, so you are ranked and citable when it hits.

| Turkey hunting | Outdoor | April | February | 11.5× |

| Hunting gear (boots, cameras) | Outdoor | November | September | 3.9× |
| Waterfowl | Outdoor | December | October | 3.6× |

How We Ran It
We selected 25 category-representative terms across roughly 22 categories in the 2A and outdoor niches (for example, "9mm ammo" for ammunition, "deer hunting" plus "elk hunting" for big game, "tent" for camping) and pulled 24 months of US monthly search-volume history from Ahrefs, July 2024 through July 2026. Each term was normalized to its own annual average, so index 100 means an average month for that category and 200 means double the average. Multi-term categories average their members' indices. The full index table drives the calendar tool above.
- Ahrefs models a recurring seasonal shape; year-over-year curves are nearly identical by design. That is the right input for planning a normal year, and it will not show one-off event spikes. We track those separately through event-sensitive terms (see Finding 4).
- One to two representative terms stand in for each category. Directionally strong, since the curves match known season structure, but a wider basket per category would tighten the amplitudes.
- US national data. State-level season dates (deer openers, turkey seasons) vary and can shift a local brand's curve by several weeks.
- Search interest is a demand proxy, and purchase timing can lead or lag it. Where we have client sales data, the curves have matched, but that check is per-brand.

Common Questions
When is firearms season for marketing purposes?
Mostly, there isn't one. Firearms categories swing just 1.2–1.8× across the year. The one real window is November–January, when gun safes (1.8×, December), suppressors (1.8×, January), optics (December), and handguns (January) all lift together on holiday gifting and new-year purchases.
When should a hunting brand publish its fall content?
By September. Deer and big-game searches peak in November at 6.1× their spring trough, and hunting gear peaks in October–November. Content published in September has time to rank and get cited by AI engines before that demand arrives. Turkey content works the same way, published by February for the April peak.
What is the most seasonal outdoor category?
Ice fishing, at 12.8× between its January peak and late-spring trough. Turkey hunting is second at 11.5× (April peak). Both dwarf anything in firearms, where the biggest swing we measured was 1.8×.
Does this calendar account for panic buying and legislation spikes?
Deliberately, no. The curves describe a normal, recurring year, which is what planning needs. Event demand is real ("ammo shortage" jumped 13× in March 2026 on a supply scare) and we monitor it through a basket of event-sensitive terms tracked monthly, separate from the calendar.
