AI Search Optimization

Get Named When Buyers Ask AI.

Answer Engine Optimization for Firearms, Hunting & Outdoor Brands

More of the buying journey now happens inside a chat window. Your customers ask ChatGPT or Google's AI which product to buy, and the answer names a handful of brands. We work to make sure yours is one of them, and that what the AI says about you is accurate.

What Changed

Ranking First No Longer Means Getting Found.

Google now puts an AI-written answer above the links on most searches. The buyer reads it, gets three or four brand recommendations, and often stops there. Publisher click-through has dropped sharply across that transition, which means a page can hold position one and still lose the customer.

The part most brands miss is where those answers come from. AI does not read your website and decide you are the best. It summarizes what the internet already says about you, then names whoever the consensus favors. Reddit threads, buying guides, YouTube comparisons, and competitor pages carry more weight in that summary than your own marketing does.

So the question is no longer only where you rank. It is whether the AI names you, whether it names you first, and whether the things it says are correct.

Why It Matters for Your Brand

Four Things This Work Protects.

Being absent from AI answers costs you quietly. There is no ranking drop to point at and no traffic alert, just fewer people arriving already convinced.

Discovery

Getting on the shortlist

When a buyer asks which product to get, the AI hands back a short list of brands. If you are not on it, you were never in the running, and you will not see that loss in any report.

Accuracy

What it says about you

AI repeats old reviews, outdated specs, and complaints you already fixed. We find those and correct the sources behind them, so buyers get current information.

Position

Being named first

Appearing in an answer is worth less than leading it. We track the order brands get named in and work the specific claims that decide it.

Durability

The channel policy cannot close

Mainstream ad platforms restrict much of this industry. Organic discovery and AI visibility keep working when an ad account gets flagged.

How AI Decides

Your Site and the Internet Have to Agree.

Across every audit we have run, the brands winning AI answers have the same thing in common. A claim shows up on their own site and in the third-party sources AI reads, and the two match. That agreement is what AI treats as confirmed.

Off-site only

Customers praise you in forums, your own pages say nothing about it. The signal exists but stays quiet, and AI under-weights it.

On-site only

Your pages make the claim, nobody else repeats it. AI reads that as marketing and looks for a second opinion.

Both, and they agree

The claim is corroborated. This is the brand that gets named, and named first.

Both, and they conflict

The worst case. AI resolves the contradiction on its own, and it often picks the least flattering version.

This is why we work both sides at once. Fixing a website while the forums still tell an old story moves very little, and so does earning great coverage that your own site never backs up.

The Receipts

We Measured This Ourselves.

The claims on this page are not borrowed from SaaS studies. We ran the first published research on AI search in the firearms and outdoor industry, and everything above traces to it, methodology included.

The State of AI Search 14,400 AI answers

We asked six engines 240 questions, ten times each, and traced 118,612 citations to their sources. Where AI recommendations actually come from in this industry.

What We Do

Four Workstreams, Run Together.

Measure what AI says now

We build a set of the questions your buyers actually ask, then track them daily across ChatGPT, Google AI, Gemini, and Perplexity. You get share of voice against named competitors, how often you are mentioned, what position you are named in, the sentiment attached to you, and which sources the answers pull from.

Make your site quotable

Most product and category pages give AI nothing to lift. We add the parts it can quote: answer-first sections, comparison and specification tables, question-and-answer blocks, and structured data. Then we build the pages you are missing entirely, usually buying guides, comparison pages, and the questions your buyers ask before they choose.

Earn the outside coverage

We identify the exact pages AI cites in your category, which is usually a mix of Reddit threads, buying guides, review sites, and YouTube comparisons. Then we go earn placement in them with product seeding, reviewer outreach, creator work, and community presence, so the outside sources start matching what your site says.

Report it in plain numbers

Every month you see what moved: citation share, position, sentiment, and which sources changed. We annotate what we shipped against what happened, so you can tell which work produced which result.

How We Work

Four Steps, Starting With Evidence.

Snapshot

We run your buyer questions through the AI tools and show you exactly how you are described today, who gets named instead, and what sources are behind it. This becomes your baseline.

Diagnosis

We separate the conversations you should be winning from the ones dragging you down, and identify which claims are accurate but uncorroborated. That decides the order of the work.

Execution

On-site content and structured data go first because they move fastest. Reviewer, creator, and community work runs alongside, since it takes longer to land.

Reporting

Monthly numbers against the baseline, with what we shipped noted next to what changed. We adjust toward whatever is producing citations.

Our Lane

Firearms, Hunting, and Outdoor Brands.

We work with brands and manufacturers in this industry, and it changes how this work gets done. Buyers here research in forums, on Reddit, and on YouTube more than almost any other category, which happens to be exactly where AI answers come from. That makes the community layer more important here than it would be for a software company.

The ad restrictions matter too. When Meta and Google limit what you can run, discovery has to come from somewhere that cannot be switched off. AI visibility is becoming that place.

We shoot, hunt, and use this gear. When we read a thread about your product, we can tell whether the complaint is a genuine problem or someone who mounted it wrong.

Who this fits

  • Brands and manufacturers selling nationallyWhere the growth question is demand and visibility.
  • Categories with heavy comparison shoppingOptics, cameras, ammunition, reloading, accessories, apparel.
  • Brands with a following they are not getting credit forCustomers already say good things, AI has not caught up.
  • Teams restricted on paidWhere organic has to carry more of the load.

Who it does not

Single-location gun shops and local retail. That work is legitimate, it is just not what we are built for, and we would rather say so than take the retainer.

Engagement Options

Three Ways to Run This.

AI search work can stand on its own, ride alongside your SEO, or get handed to your own team to run. Which one fits depends on how much internal bandwidth you have.

Option One

Standalone AI Search

We run the tracking, the on-site answer content, and the outside coverage as a dedicated engagement. Best when your SEO is already handled or handled elsewhere.

Option Two

Added to Your SEO

Folded into an existing Coutts SEO or full marketing engagement, sharing the same content calendar and reporting. Usually the most efficient of the three.

Option Three

Consulting for In-House Teams

You have marketers, writers, and a developer already. We diagnose, set up the tracking, write the playbook, train your team, and hand it over.

Already have an in-house team?

If your bottleneck is knowing what to do rather than having someone to do it, the consulting engagement is probably the better fit. Same diagnosis, built to be handed off instead of run by us.

Getting Started

Scoped to Fit, Never Sold From a Menu.

We do not publish packages for this work, because the right scope depends on things we have not seen yet: how AI describes you today, how loud your category's comparison layer is, and how much of the fix your team can carry internally. Guessing at that from a pricing table serves nobody.

How it starts

Every engagement opens with a consultation. We run a snapshot of your buyer questions through the AI tools, show you exactly how you are described and who wins instead, and tell you honestly whether this work is a fit for where your brand is right now.

What happens next

If it is a fit, we scope the engagement together against what the snapshot showed: some brands need the full two-sided build, some need the on-site work first, and some are better served by our consulting engagement for in-house teams. If it is not a fit, we say so and you keep the snapshot.

We will tell you upfront when a budget will not do what you are hoping it will, and when your category does not need the heaviest approach. Partners trust us because we do not sell what will not work.

Questions We Get Often

Straight Answers.

What is AI search optimization?

It is the work of getting your brand named and cited when someone asks an AI tool like ChatGPT, Google AI, Gemini, or Perplexity for a recommendation in your category. It covers three things: what your own site says, what third-party sources say about you, and measuring how often the AI names you compared to your competitors.

Is this different from SEO?

The two overlap without being the same job. Classic SEO earns a ranked link. This earns a mention inside the answer, which gets decided as much by what Reddit threads, buying guides, and YouTube reviews say about you as by your own pages. We regularly find brands ranking first for a term and going completely unmentioned in the AI answer above it.

How long before we see movement?

On-site work and structured data show up first, often within the first month, measured as your own domain getting cited more often. Position and sentiment inside the answers move later, because those depend on outside sources refreshing on their own schedule. Plan on leading indicators in 30 to 60 days and a shift in the recommendation itself over four to six months.

Can you guarantee we get cited?

No, and nobody can. What we do guarantee is the work and the reporting. You will see exactly how AI describes you today, what changed each month, and which sources are driving it.

Can we buy this without an SEO retainer?

Yes. It runs standalone, it folds into an existing SEO or full marketing engagement, and it also works as a consulting engagement where we train your in-house team to run it.

Does this matter more for firearms and outdoor brands?

It does. Mainstream ad platforms restrict much of this industry, so organic discovery carries more of the weight. Buyers here also research heavily in forums, on Reddit, and on YouTube, which are the same sources AI builds its answers from. Both facts push in the same direction.
